# Upgrade Database

SonicDICOM PACS uses Microsoft SQL Server Compact as the default database.
Since Microsoft SQL Server Compact is not necessary to be installed, it is suited for trial use of SonicDICOM PACS.
However, its performance would be insufficient in production environment.
We recommend upgrading the database to Microsoft SQL Server by the following step.

# Installation of Microsoft SQL Server

Please download Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Express from the following URL:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=55994 (opens new window)

Please start up "SQLServer2017-SSEI-Expr.exe".
After starting up, click "Download Media".

In a screen of selecting a package, please select "Express Core" and click "Download".

After the download is done, please click "Open folder" and then click "Close".

Please start up the installer "SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe" that is in the displayed folder, and then click "OK".

Please click "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation".

Please read License Terms and please put a check "I accept the license terms" after confirming its contents. And then click "Next".

Please click "Next".

If the environment can use Microsoft Update, we recommend putting a check "Use Microsoft Update to check for updates (recommended)".

Please click "Next".

Please put a check the following item and click "Next".

  • Database Engine Services

Please select "Default instance".
And click "Next".

Please click "Next".

Please click "Next".

Please click "Close".

On SQL Server Installation Center, please click "Install SQL Server Management Tools".
Or please access to the following URL.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssms/download-sql-server-management-studio-ssms?view=sql-server-2017 (opens new window)

Please click the link on the displayed web page, and download the installer.

Please start up the downloaded installer "SSMS-Setup-ENU.exe".
And Please read License Terms and Privacy Statement, then click "Install" after confirming its contents.

Once installation is done, please click "Close".

On the Windows start menu, please follow All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2017 > SQL Server Management Studio to start up. Please click "Connect".

When SonicDICOM PACS accesses the database, "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" is the user name because SonicDICOM PACS operates as a Windows service.
From the left pane, please click "Security" and then click "Login".
And right-click "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" and click "Properties".

When SonicDICOM PACS starts up, it needs to build database file. So "sysadmin" permission is necessary.
From the left pane, please click "Server Roles", put a check "sysadmin", and click "OK".

# Change the database on PACS Manager

Please start up PACS Manager.
If the status of Windows Service "DICOMApp" is Running, please click "Stop".

Please open Server tab and select "Microsoft SQL Server" of Database field.
Then please enter "localhost" in Source field.
Once you click "Save", it will be completed.
